Ayad Akhtar is a Pakistani American playwright, novelist, screenwriter and actor. He was born in Staten Island, New York and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
His play Junk won the 2018 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, and is nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Play. Other plays include Pulitzer Prize and OBIE award winner Disgraced, which was also named the most produced play in America for the 2015-2016 season; OBIE and Outer Critics Circle winner The Invisible Hand; and The Who & The What. Akhtar is adapting his 2012 novel American Dervish for the stage. The play will debut at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater.
Akhtar co-wrote and starred in the film The War Within, which was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay. As an actor, he starred in HBO’s Too Big to Fail, playing the role of Neel Kashkari.
